The XBOX 360 - A console, notorious for its great gaming, online connectivity and of course its technical problems. According to Wikipedia there are over 100 encountered technical problems with the "top of the market" console. The most infamous of these is the Red Ring of Death, known by various names such as RRoD, 3 Red Light, Lights of Death, is signified by the 3 flashing red lights surrounding the power button of the XBOX 360. Since the release of the XBOX 360 in November 2005 there have been many publishings and articles in the media regarding the, considered by some, relatively high rate of console failures. One source has cited that in early testing 68 out of every 100 XBOX 360's were found to be defective, meaning only 32% were actually working. In 2007 Microsoft responded to such failures by extending the standard one year warranty to 3 years for all "Red Ring of Death" related problems.
Anyway, on to the XBOX 360 errors and why you get them!
First off we have the red flashing lights. As said above, the most common of these types of errors is the RRoD or Red Ring of Death error. The red flashing lights relate to the LED's around the power button which are divided into four sections. On start up these LED's usually flash green but when an error such as the RRoD occurs they flash red.
There are 4 types of flashing red lights:
Four Red Lights - The four red lights error means that the A/V cable is not plugged in correctly. Try removing it, wipe it with a dry wipe cloth and then plugging it back in.
Three Red Lights - The infamous Red Ring of Death. This problem relates to the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit, a chip which controls the graphics) in your XBOX 360. From general use this GPU can become loose or too hot due to lack of sufficient thermal paste. If your XBOX 360 is still within 3 years of purchase date you're covered by Microsoft's 3 year extended warranty, if you're not see below.
Two Red Lights - This is a problem with the system overheating. When doing system air reflows (removing the heatsink to allow the chip to heat up on purpose) you get this type of error. This can also be caused possibly by a faulty fan, so to check if your fan is still working place your hand at the back of the XBOX 360 console and make sure air is circulating. If it is, then put your XBOX 360 in a more ventilated area.
One Red Light - This type of error is accompanied with an on screen "E" error, e.g. E45, E67 etc. Here is a short list of "E" errors and what each one means...
E64, E65 & E66: DvD drive error, try to reboot your console. Make sure the disc is inserted properly.
E67, E68, E69 & E79: Hard Drive error, try to disconnect the Hard Drive and play without it. Make sure the hard drive clip is fixed in correctly.
E71: Possibly an incorrectly installed dashboard update.
E73: General hardware error, make sure nothing is stuck in the ethernet port. Try to unplug your ethernet/ RJ45 cable if you have one.
E74: The second most infamous error to the red ring of death. Unfortunately, this error can be a bit more quirky to fix and it isn't covered by Microsoft's 3 year extended warranty. First, ensure the A/V cable is inserted correctly and reboot your system. If this doesn't work it is either an error resulting from a faulty ANA/HANA chip or a GPU error (similar to the red ring of death). Microsoft charge $140 + shipping to fix these errors, which in my opinion is almost as much as brand new XBOX 360, however if you want another solution see below.
That about sums up the XBOX 360 error's, I hope this article was of help to you!
